20 Years of King of the Hammers 

2026 marks the 20th anniversary of King of the Hammers. Combining desert racing, rock crawling, endurance, and mechanical innovation into a single event, KOH pushes both drivers and machines beyond conventional limits. Twenty years ago, it started with a handful of rigs and a dream. Now it’s the largest motorized event on America’s public lands and showcases what motorized recreation can be when we have access to places like Johnson Valley. But that access isn’t guaranteed…

A Sweepstakes to Defend Access

Nearly a decade ago the off-road community banded together to save the Hammers and access to Johnson Valley. However, public land access is never static. It is constantly, and often quietly, contested.

In September of 2025, a new military proposal once again threatened access to the Congressionality-recognized OHV recreation area of Johnson Valley. That’s when BlueRibbon Coalition and the off-road community stood our ground— again.

BRC brought together a coalition of off-road associations to direct advocacy efforts to ensure that military expansion would not impair the ability of King of the Hammers to operate.

While KOH is safe this year, the issue is ongoing. BlueRibbon Coalition is actively engaged in this process—monitoring developments, advocating for access protections, and preparing to respond if conditions change.
